Every year, thousands of aspirants clear the WBCS Prelims and then lose marks in the Mains for one simple reason: they know the content but cannot present it the way the examiner expects. In the West Bengal Civil Service examination, the Mains stage is where ranks are decided, and written expression, structure, word-limit discipline and accuracy matter as much as knowledge.
This guide to WBCS Mains model answers is written for beginners and serious repeaters alike. You will learn how the 2026 Mains is structured, which papers are descriptive and which are objective, how past-paper question types are asked, and how to write answers that match the Commission's expectations. Model answers are included for the question types that appear again and again: letter writing, report drafting, précis, translation, and analytical answers.
The article closes with a practical recommendation on how Ray Academy IAS can support your WBCS Mains preparation.
Note on sample questions: Official WBPSC papers should always be your primary source. The sample questions below follow the exact formats, word limits and themes seen in past WBCS Mains papers. They are written in the style of previous years' questions, not copied from any specific paper. Download the original papers from psc.wb.gov.in and practise them alongside this guide.

WBCS Mains Exam Pattern: What You Actually Write
The most widely published structure has six compulsory papers, plus one optional subject (two papers) for Group A and B candidates only. Each paper is 200 marks and 3 hours long.
Paper | Subject | Type |
Paper I | Bengali / Hindi / Urdu / Nepali / Santali (language) | Descriptive |
Paper II | English: letter, report, précis, composition, translation | Descriptive |
Paper III | General Studies I: Indian History (National Movement), Geography with focus on West Bengal | Objective |
Paper IV | General Studies II: Science and Technology, Environment, Current Affairs | Objective |
Paper V | Constitution of India and Indian Economy, including role of the RBI | Objective |
Paper VI | Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning | Objective |
Papers VII-VIII | Optional subject (Group A and B only) | Descriptive |
Published totals: about 1,600 Mains marks for Group A and B (with optionals), plus a 200-mark Personality Test. Group C and D have fewer papers and lower interview marks.
Important update to check: one coaching-portal source reports a revised structure from the 2025 cycle, with a two-paper Prelims and a 10-paper Mains. Because sources disagree, read the official notification for your exact cycle before you finalise your strategy.
What this means for you: the descriptive marks sit in the language paper, the English paper and (for Group A and B) the optional papers. These are the papers where good model-answer practice pays off directly. The objective papers reward accuracy and speed, but the descriptive papers reward technique.
How Past WBCS Mains Papers Ask Questions
The English paper has stayed remarkably consistent. Based on the published syllabus:
Letter writing within 150 words
Report drafting within 200 words
Précis writing
Composition
Translation from Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali into English
The language paper tests composition and comprehension in your chosen language. Optional papers ask analytical, theory-plus-application questions in the subject you picked.
The Five-Step Model Answer Approach
Whatever the question type, top scorers follow the same loop.
Decode the question. Underline the task word (write, draft, summarise, translate, discuss) and the limit (150 words, 200 words).
Plan in 60 seconds. Jot three to five points before writing.
Follow the format strictly. Formats such as letter or report carry marks by themselves.
Stay inside the word limit. Going over costs marks; falling far short signals weak content.
Review for language. Check grammar, spelling, tense and tone in the last two minutes.
Model Answer 1: Letter Writing (within 150 words)
Sample question (PYQ style): Write a letter to the Chairman of your municipality drawing attention to the poor drainage and waterlogging in your locality during the monsoon.
Model answer:
From, Rahul Sen 12, Station Road Bhowanipore, Kolkata - 700 025
Date: 31 October 2026
To, The Chairman Kolkata Municipal Corporation Kolkata - 700 001
Subject: Request for urgent improvement of drainage in Station Road locality
Sir,
I write on behalf of the residents of Station Road to bring to your notice the serious waterlogging that affects our locality every monsoon. Even moderate rain leaves the road submerged for several days, disrupting the movement of schoolchildren, the elderly and daily workers. Stagnant water has also increased the risk of dengue and other water-borne diseases.
The main cause is the blocked and under-capacity drain along the road, which has not been desilted for a long time. We therefore request you to arrange immediate desilting, repair the damaged culverts and plan a long-term upgrade of the drainage line.
We shall be grateful for your prompt action.
Yours faithfully, Rahul Sen (On behalf of the residents)
Why this scores well: correct address block, a clear subject line, a three-part body (problem, cause, request), polite tone, and about 130 words in the body.
Model Answer 2: Report Drafting (within 200 words)
Sample question (PYQ style): Draft a report for a daily newspaper on a mass tree-plantation drive held in your district.
Model answer:
Mass Tree Plantation Drive Held in Bankura
By a Staff Reporter, Bankura, 31 October 2026
More than 5,000 saplings were planted across the district on Saturday during a mass plantation drive organised by the district administration with schools, self-help groups and local clubs.
The drive began at 8 a.m. at the district stadium, where the District Magistrate inaugurated the programme by planting a sapling. Volunteers then fanned out to roadsides, school grounds and degraded village land. Native species such as neem, mahua and arjun were prioritised, as they suit the local laterite soil.
Speaking at the event, the District Magistrate said that each sapling had been tagged and would be monitored for survival over the next two years. Students were assigned individual saplings to look after as part of an adoption scheme.
Officials said the initiative aims to improve green cover, check soil erosion and lower local temperatures. Residents expressed support and promised to protect the plants.
The administration plans a follow-up survey in six months to assess the survival rate.
Why this scores well: it has a headline, a dateline, an opening paragraph answering who, what, where and when, supporting details, a quote and a closing line. It is written in the third person and the past tense, which is the expected convention.
Model Answer 3: Précis Writing
Sample passage (original, for practice):
"Rivers have shaped the culture and economy of Bengal for centuries. Their fertile floodplains support dense farming populations, and the waterways have long served as arteries of trade. Yet rapid urbanisation, untreated sewage and industrial discharge have degraded many of these rivers. Fish stocks have fallen, drinking water has become costlier to treat, and communities that depended on the rivers for their livelihood face growing hardship. Experts argue that river restoration cannot be left to government agencies alone. Citizen monitoring, stricter enforcement of pollution norms and the revival of traditional water management practices must work together if the rivers are to recover."
Model précis (about one-third of the length):
Rivers of Bengal: Decline and Revival
Bengal's rivers have long sustained agriculture, trade and culture, but urbanisation, sewage and industrial waste have damaged them, reducing fish stocks and livelihoods and raising water-treatment costs. Experts say recovery needs combined effort: citizen monitoring, strict pollution control and revival of traditional water management.
Précis rules to remember: give a title, write in your own words, use the third person and the present tense, include no examples or personal opinions, and keep the central idea intact.
Model Answer 4: Translation into English
Sample passage (Bengali):
শিক্ষা মানুষকে আলোর পথ দেখায়। শিক্ষিত মানুষ নিজের অধিকার ও কর্তব্য সম্পর্কে সচেতন থাকে। তাই একটি দেশের প্রকৃত উন্নতির জন্য সকলের শিক্ষা নিশ্চিত করা অত্যন্ত প্রয়োজন।
Model translation:
Education shows people the path of light. An educated person remains aware of his or her rights and duties. Therefore, to ensure the real progress of a country, it is extremely necessary to guarantee education for all.
Translation tips: translate meaning, not word for word; keep the tense unchanged; use natural English idiom; never leave a sentence untranslated.
Model Answer 5: Analytical Answer (Optional Papers and General Studies Practice)
Sample question: Discuss the ecological and economic importance of the Sundarbans. (200 words)
Model answer structure:
Introduction (2-3 lines): The Sundarbans, the world's largest contiguous mangrove delta, shared by India and Bangladesh, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the Bengal tiger.
Ecological importance: protects the coast from cyclones and storm surges; acts as a carbon sink; breeding ground for fish and crustaceans; biodiversity hotspot.
Economic importance: livelihoods from fishing, honey and wax collection; eco-tourism; fisheries supplying regional markets.
Threats: sea-level rise, salinity intrusion, cyclone frequency, human-wildlife conflict, pollution.
Way forward: mangrove restoration, community-based management, climate-resilient livelihoods, sustainable tourism.
Conclusion: protecting the Sundarbans protects both biodiversity and the lives of millions in coastal Bengal.
This intro-body-way-forward-conclusion structure works for almost any analytical question in the optional papers.
Common Mistakes That Cost Marks
Ignoring the word limit in the letter and report questions
Skipping the format (no subject line, no headline, no dateline)
Writing the précis in the first person or copying sentences from the passage
Weak grammar and tense errors in the English paper
Not practising handwriting speed, since three hours go quickly
