Choosing an optional subject is one of the biggest decisions in OAS preparation, because it carries a fixed share of your Mains marks and shapes your study plan for the next year or more. This guide gives the full list of optional subjects for the Odisha Civil Services (OCS) Mains, explains how the optional paper works under the current pattern, and shows how to choose one.

Quick answer: For the OCS Mains you choose one optional subject, which has two papers of 250 marks each (500 marks in total). The OPSC subject-code notice for the OCS Main (Written) Examination-2025 lists 30 optional subjects, plus literature papers in four Indian languages.

Where the optional subject fits in the OCS Mains

The Mains is a descriptive written exam of nine papers, followed by a Personality Test. Two language papers are qualifying only, and seven papers count for merit.

The optional subject therefore accounts for 500 of the 1,750 written marks, which is about 29% of the written merit marks and 25% of the final 2,000. Prelims marks are not counted in the final merit.

A note on older articles: many websites still describe a pattern with two optional subjects, four optional papers and 1,200 optional marks. That was the earlier format. The pattern now follows the Odisha Civil Services (Combined Competitive Recruitment Examination) Rules, 1991, as amended in 2022, and has one optional subject.

Literature of an Indian language

In addition to the 30 subjects above, candidates can take the literature of a language as their optional. The OPSC subject-code notice dated 13 October 2026 lists four: English, Hindi, Odia and Urdu. Some older descriptions of the pattern also mention Persian and Sanskrit, so if you plan to take one of those, confirm in the current advertisement that it is available.

Do not confuse the compulsory Odia and English language papers (qualifying, 250 marks each) with the optional literature papers. They are separate papers with separate subject codes.

OPSC optional subjects that are not available in UPSC

Five of the 30 OPSC optional subjects do not appear in the UPSC Civil Services Mains list, which has 25 core subjects plus 23 language literatures (48 in all):

The other 25 OPSC subjects are also UPSC optionals: Agriculture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Anthropology, Botany, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Commerce & Accountancy, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Geography, Geology, History, Law, Management, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Science, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science & International Relations, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology, Statistics and Zoology.

On literature, English, Hindi, Odia and Urdu literature are offered by both. If you take Persian literature in OPSC, note that it is not among UPSC’s literature options.

Why this matters: if you also plan to write the UPSC Civil Services Exam, an optional chosen from the common 25 lets one syllabus serve both exams. If you choose one of the five above, it will count only for OPSC, and you would have to switch if you later take UPSC seriously. Neither exam’s syllabus is identical for a shared subject, so check each syllabus before assuming full overlap.

The UPSC list here follows the 48-subject list published for recent Civil Services Mains cycles. UPSC can revise its list in any notification, so confirm it on upsc.gov.in.

How to choose your optional subject

There is no “best” optional in general, and OPSC does not publish subject-wise success data that would let anyone claim otherwise. A better approach is to test each shortlisted subject against these questions.

1. Does your graduation background give you a head start? If you studied a subject at degree level, you already know its vocabulary and concepts, so the learning curve is far shorter. This is the strongest reason to pick a subject.

2. Does it overlap with the General Studies papers? The GS papers cover Indian and Odisha heritage and culture, history and geography, society, governance, polity, social justice, technology, economic development, environment, disaster management, ethics and integrity. Subjects whose syllabus overlaps with these areas let one round of study serve two papers. As a rough guide:

  • GS-I areas (heritage, history, geography, society): History, Geography, Sociology, Anthropology

  • GS-II areas (governance, constitution, polity, social justice): Political Science & International Relations, Public Administration, Law

  • GS-III areas (economy, technology, environment, disaster management): Economics, Agriculture, Geography, Botany, Zoology, Geology

  • GS-IV areas (ethics, integrity, aptitude): Philosophy, Psychology

This is an indication of topic overlap, not a promise of marks. Always compare the official optional syllabus with the GS syllabus before you decide.

3. Can you get good study material and feedback? A subject is only as useful as the books, notes, mentors and test series available to you. Technical optionals, such as engineering streams, often have strong textbooks but fewer answer-writing resources aimed at civil services.

4. Is the syllabus manageable for your time frame? Count the topics and estimate how many weeks you need for a first pass, a revision and answer-writing practice. A shorter or familiar syllabus may be safer if you are preparing alongside a job.

5. Do you enjoy it? You will spend hundreds of hours on this subject. Genuine interest keeps you consistent.

Common mistakes when choosing an optional

  • Choosing by trend or by what a topper took. Another person’s background and strengths are not yours.

  • Switching late. Changing optional after months of study is costly. Test your choice with a few weeks of reading and a few answers before you commit.

  • Ignoring the syllabus. Read the official syllabus line by line before deciding, instead of relying on a subject’s reputation.

  • Neglecting answer writing. Both optional papers are descriptive, three hours each, so practice writing matters more than reading.

Frequently asked questions

How many optional subjects do I have to choose for the OCS Mains? One optional subject, with two papers of 250 marks each, under the current pattern.

How many optional subjects are there in OPSC? Thirty subjects, plus literature of a language (English, Hindi, Odia and Urdu in the October 2026 subject-code notice).

Is the optional subject compulsory? Yes. All Mains papers are compulsory, and you must take one optional.

Do optional marks count in the final merit? Yes. Both optional papers are in Part II and count toward merit, along with the Personality Test.

Can I take an engineering or science subject without a related degree? The subjects are open to graduates of any discipline, as the exam requires only a bachelor’s degree. In practice, technical subjects are much harder without the background, so check the syllabus before choosing.

Do Prelims marks depend on the optional subject? No. The Prelims has two General Studies papers and no optional subject.

Are the compulsory Odia and English papers the same as the optional language literature? No. The compulsory Odia and English papers are qualifying language tests. The optional literature papers are subject papers that count for merit.

When is the next OCS Mains? The OCS Main (Written) Examination-2025 is scheduled from 29 October to 7 November 2026. Watch opsc.gov.in for the next advertisement and any change in the pattern.
