Am I Eligible for UPSC CSE 2027? The Quick Answer

To appear in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2027, a General or EWS candidate must hold a bachelor's degree, be an Indian citizen for IAS, IPS and IFS, be at least 21 and not yet 32 years old on 1 August 2027, and have attempts remaining out of six. Age limits rise to 35 for OBC and 37 for SC/ST candidates, and attempts rise to 9 for OBC and unlimited for SC/ST, within the age limit.

These rules follow the CSE 2026 notification, issued on 4 February 2026, which is the latest published. The CSE 2027 notification is scheduled for 13 January 2027, with applications closing on 2 February 2027, and it will confirm the final conditions. As of 30 October 2026, we have not seen an official announcement of any change to the age limits or attempts.

Nationality Requirement

For the IAS, IPS and IFS, you must be a citizen of India. For the other Group A and Group B services, the notification also admits certain other categories, such as subjects of Nepal or Bhutan and some persons of Indian origin who migrated from specified countries, subject to a certificate of eligibility from the Government of India. Read the nationality paragraph of the notification closely if you are not an Indian citizen.

Educational Qualification

The general rule: a degree from a Central or State university, a deemed university, or another institution recognised by the Government of India as equivalent.

Who else can apply:

  • Final-year students and candidates awaiting results can apply for the Prelims. You must submit proof of passing your degree when you apply for the Mains, in the manner and by the date UPSC specifies. Failing to do so makes you ineligible for the Mains.

  • Candidates with professional or technical qualifications recognised as equivalent to a degree are eligible, as specified in the notification.

  • Medical students who have passed the final MBBS examination but have not completed the internship can appear, subject to producing the required certificate at the time of the interview.

Indian Forest Service (IFoS): IFoS uses the CSE Prelims, but it has a stricter qualification. Candidates for IFoS need a bachelor's degree with at least one of the following subjects: animal husbandry and veterinary science, botany, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics, statistics, zoology, or a degree in agriculture, forestry or engineering. Confirm the details in the notification before choosing IFoS.

UPSC Age Limit 2027

The age is counted on 1 August of the exam year, not on the day of the exam or the day of application. For CSE 2027, the cut-off date is expected to be 1 August 2027.

The rule: you must have attained 21 years and not attained the maximum age on 1 August 2027.

Remember: the minimum age matters too. If you were born after 1 August 2006, you cannot apply in 2027.

Other Age Relaxations

Beyond the main categories, the notification has provided relaxations for these groups in recent cycles:

Group

Relaxation

What it means for the General limit

Defence personnel disabled in operations and released as a result

3 years

35

Ex-servicemen, including commissioned officers and ECOs / SSCOs, who have completed at least 5 years of military service and been released

Candidates ordinarily domiciled in Jammu and Kashmir from 1 January 1980 to 31 December 1989

Relaxations are cumulative with category relaxations. For example, an SC candidate who is also an ex-serviceman with the required service may add both, reaching 42. The exact conditions for each group, including the proofs required, are listed in the notification.

How an attempt is counted

  • Appearing in any one paper of the Prelims counts as an attempt. Applying but not appearing does not.

  • You must appear in both Prelims papers, or you are disqualified.

  • An attempt counts even if you are later disqualified or your candidature is cancelled, as the notification provides.

  • Attempts are counted at the Prelims stage. Qualifying the Mains or the interview is not required for it to count.

  • Age relaxation does not add attempts. Attempts and age are two separate conditions, and you must satisfy both.

  • Once you take an attempt in any CSE, it also counts for the Indian Forest Service, since both use the same Prelims.

Worked Examples

Example 1: General candidate, born 15 March 2000. Age on 1 August 2027: 27. Ages in later years: 28 (2028), 29 (2029), 30 (2030), 31 (2031). In 2032 the candidate would be 32, so the age limit ends eligibility after the CSE 2031 cycle. Even though the attempt limit is six, a first attempt in 2027 gives this candidate at most five attempts. Age, not attempts, is the binding limit.

Example 2: General candidate, born 10 November 2005. Age on 1 August 2027: 21, so the candidate can apply. Six attempts from 2027 to 2032 take the candidate to age 26, so the attempt limit is the binding one.

Example 3: OBC candidate, born 20 January 1994. Age on 1 August 2027: 33. The limit for OBC is 35, so the candidate is eligible. The candidate remains within the age limit until the cycle in which the 1 August age reaches 35, so up to 2028 (age 34 on 1 August 2028) and not 2029 (age 35).

Example 4: Born on 1 August 1995. This General candidate attains 32 on 1 August 2027 and is therefore not eligible. Born on 2 August 1995, the same candidate would be eligible, with 31 years and 364 days on the cut-off. The cut-off date is strict.

Documents and Proofs to Keep Ready

Document

Why it matters

Matriculation or secondary school certificate

UPSC takes your date of birth from this certificate or an equivalent; it cannot be changed later

Degree certificate or provisional proof

Needed to prove your qualification, and mandatory for the Mains if you applied as a final-year candidate

Caste certificate (SC / ST)

Needed for relaxation and reservation

OBC non-creamy layer certificate

Must be in the prescribed format and period; creamy-layer candidates are treated as General

EWS certificate

Needed to claim EWS benefits

PwBD certificate

Needed for relaxation and any reservation

Ex-servicemen or J&K domicile proofs

Needed if you claim these relaxations

Photo ID and recent photograph

Needed for the application and the exam

UPSC does not accept other proofs of age, such as affidavits, in place of the matriculation certificate or an equivalent. If your certificates have errors, get them corrected well before January.

Medical and Physical Standards

Candidates who qualify through the Mains and Interview undergo a medical examination for the services they have chosen, as per the rules in the notification. Some services, such as the IPS and certain other services, have specified physical standards. These do not affect your eligibility for the exam, but they matter for allocation. Read the service-wise standards in the notification before you fill in your service preferences.

Application Process and Fee

  • Where: Online, through the official UPSC website. New applicants complete One Time Registration (OTR) first.

  • When: The calendar lists 13 January 2027 for notification and 2 February 2027 as the last date.

  • Fee: As in the CSE 2026 notification, Rs 100 for General and OBC candidates, with women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates exempt.

  • Withdrawal and corrections: UPSC typically provides a short window for corrections and a withdrawal window. Check the notification for dates.

For the full timeline, see our UPSC Exam Calendar 2027 guide.

Common Mistakes and Myths About UPSC Eligibility

  • Myth: your age is counted on the exam date. It is counted on 1 August of the exam year.

  • Myth: age relaxation gives extra attempts. It does not.

  • Mistake: appearing in Prelims 'just for practice'. Even one paper counts as an attempt.

  • Mistake: forgetting to submit degree proof for the Mains. Final-year candidates can lose their Mains eligibility.

  • Mistake: using the wrong OBC certificate. A creamy-layer or wrongly formatted certificate can cost you your relaxation.

  • Mistake: relying on a date of birth that differs from your matriculation certificate. UPSC goes by the certificate.

  • Myth: there is a medical or physical test for all candidates at the exam stage. Medical examination comes after the final stages.

Will the Age Limit Change for UPSC CSE 2027?

The age limits and attempts have remained 32, 35 and 37 for General, OBC and SC/ST candidates respectively, with 6, 9 and unlimited attempts. Public discussions about changing them have come up from time to time, but as of 30 October 2026 we are not aware of any official change for CSE 2027. The notification on 13 January 2027 is the only source that matters. We will update this article on the day it is released.
