OPSC OCS Mains 2025 Essay Paper Analysis: 2024 vs 2025 Trends and RAYACADEMY IAS Test Series Reflections

OPSC conducted the OCS Mains 2025 Essay paper on 5 November 2026. All five topics were short philosophical aphorisms, from "The unexamined life is not worth living" to "At its worst, privilege is blindness". This was exactly the essay format we trained our students in: 12 of the 20 topics in our essay test series were abstract, philosophical statements. Candidates had to write only two essays, and two of the five 2025 topics had a strong thematic match with essays we had set.

This OCS Mains 2025 Essay paper analysis has three parts. First, a breakdown of the 2025 topics. Second, a 2024 vs 2025 comparison with the OCS 2024 Essay paper, so you can see how OPSC's essay pattern is settling. Third, a topic-by-topic look at how we prepared our students for them. If you are preparing for OCS 2026 or the Odisha Administrative Service (OAS) exam, this OCS Essay analysis shows you what kind of essay OPSC now expects.

OCS Mains 2025 Essay Paper Analysis: Topics and pattern

The OCS Mains 2025 Essay paper carried 250 marks over 3 hours. Candidates wrote two essays of 1,000 to 1,200 words each from five topics, both in the same language they chose in their application. An essay in English and another in Odia would score zero.

Key features of the OCS Mains 2025 Essay paper

  • Every topic was a philosophical aphorism. There was no direct topic on the economy, technology, environment or governance. Each topic was a short statement that the candidate had to interpret.

  • Interpretation decided the score. Topics like "Music is moral law" and "Vengeance is the lazy form of grief" reward candidates who can unpack an abstract idea and connect it to society, governance and personal life.

  • Choice still favoured the prepared. Two essays out of five meant candidates could pick the topics closest to what they had practised. Social themes (prejudice, privilege) and self-reflection were the safer choices.

  • Language discipline mattered. Both essays had to be in the same medium, so bilingual candidates had to commit to one language for the whole paper.

OCS Mains 2025 Essay Paper Analysis: 2025 vs 2024 comparison

OPSC has now set two OCS Essay papers in a row made up entirely of philosophical aphorisms. This is no longer a one-off. It is the settled OCS essay pattern, and the single most important fact for OCS 2026 essay preparation.

What changed in 2025

  • From society to the self. 2024 leaned towards society and politics: freedom, gender and justice. 2025 turned inward: self-examination, grief and vengeance.

  • New themes appeared. Art ("Music is moral law") and emotion ("Vengeance is the lazy form of grief") had no counterpart in 2024.

  • Political freedom dropped out. 2024 asked about freedom directly. 2025 had no topic on freedom, rights or the state.

  • A stricter language rule. The 2025 paper stated in its instructions that both essays must be in the medium chosen in the application, and that mixing English and Odia would score zero. The 2024 paper did not carry this instruction.

What this means for OCS 2026

Expect five philosophical aphorisms again, covering social justice, society, values, the self and at least one unexpected area such as art or emotion. That is why we built our essay tests on the 2024 pattern. Our topics echoed 2024 directly: "Freedom without responsibility is not freedom but licence" (Test 3, Topic 2) for freedom, "You cannot step twice in the same river" (Test 1, Topic 3) for the ever-changing Sun, and "A just society cannot be built merely through laws; it must be built through values" (Test 3, Topic 5) for justice and values. The 2025 paper kept that pattern, and our students were ready for it.

How we built the RAYACADEMY IAS essay test series for OCS

We set four essay tests with five topics each, 20 topics in all, mixing concrete themes with abstract ones.

From thematic to philosophical

Test 2 used theme-based topics on environment, climate, women's education, terrorism and AI. Tests 3 and 4 used only philosophical statements, such as "Freedom without responsibility is not freedom but licence" and "The loudest change often begins in silence". That is exactly the format OPSC chose in 2025.

12 of 20 topics were abstract aphorisms

We made our students practise interpreting short, open-ended statements: all five topics in Test 3, all five in Test 4, and two in Test 1, including Heraclitus's "You cannot step twice in the same river".

Bilingual, English and Odia

We set every essay topic in both English and Odia, so students practised in the same medium they would use in the exam.

Reflection analysis

1

The unexamined life is not worth living.

“The quality of our thoughts determines the quality of our life.” (Test 3, Topic 1)

“The greatest victory is the victory over oneself.” (Test 3, Topic 3)

Strong overlap (70%): Both of our topics asked students to write about self-reflection and its effect on how we live. We had trained them to move from personal introspection to its role in society and public life.

2

Prejudice is the child of ignorance.

A society grows when disagreement becomes dialogue rather than division. (Test 4, Topic 2)Education is the bridge between aspiration and achievement. (Test 1, Topic 5)

Partial overlap (50%) + classroom coverage: We had our students write on division in society and on education as its remedy. In our essay classes, we worked on prejudice, stereotypes and ignorance as a theme.

3

Music is moral law.

“A just society cannot be built merely through laws; it must be built through values.” (Test 3, Topic 5)

Partial overlap (30%) + classroom coverage: We trained our students on values as the basis of a moral order. In our essay classes, we covered art and culture as sources of values.

4

Vengeance is the lazy form of grief.

“The greatest victory is the victory over oneself.” (Test 3, Topic 3) Terrorism has no nationality, no religion, yet it threatens the very fabric of civilized society. (Test 2, Topic 4)

Partial overlap (45%) + classroom coverage: We trained our students on self-mastery over emotions and on cycles of violence. In class, we covered forgiveness and restorative justice.

5

At its worst, privilege is blindness.

Progress acquires meaning only when those at the margins become participants in it. (Test 4, Topic 4) “A just society cannot be built merely through laws; it must be built through values.” (Test 3, Topic 5)

Strong overlap (70%): Privilege is the other side of marginalisation. We had our students write on inclusion of the margins and on a just society, the core of this essay.

What this means in marks

  • Both essays, full 250 marks, on practised themes. Candidates write only two essays. Topic 1 (the unexamined life) and Topic 5 (privilege is blindness) both had strong matches in our tests, so a RAYACADEMY student could write the entire paper on themes we had already made them write on.

  • 100% format match. All five 2025 topics were philosophical aphorisms, the exact format of 12 of our 20 test topics, including every topic in Tests 3 and 4.

  • Why this matters more than topic matches. Essay topics rarely repeat word for word. What wins marks is the skill of unpacking an abstract statement, and that is the skill we drilled.

OCS Essay preparation strategy for OCS 2026

The OCS Mains 2025 Essay paper rewards candidates who can take a short philosophical statement and build a rich, balanced, 1,200-word argument around it.

1. Practise abstract topics, not just themes

All five 2025 topics were aphorisms. Write at least one philosophical essay a week, on statements about life, society, emotion, art and justice.

2. Use a fixed interpretation framework

For every aphorism, ask what it means literally, what it means figuratively, where it is true, where it fails, and what it implies for the individual, society, governance and the world.

3. Build a bank of examples

Keep ready examples from Indian philosophy, history, literature, science, governance and Odisha's own culture, such as Jagannath culture, Odissi music and dance, and Odisha's reformers. One essay should draw on many fields.

4. Choose your two topics in the first 10 minutes

Pick the topics where you can write the most balanced essay, not the ones that sound attractive. Then spend 15 minutes planning each essay before writing.

5. Commit to one language

Both essays must be in the same medium as your application. Practise in that language from day one.

6. Write under timed conditions

Two essays of 1,000 to 1,200 words in 3 hours leave about 75 minutes of writing per essay after planning. Only full-length practice builds that rhythm.

OCS Mains 2025 Essay paper analysis

The OCS Mains 2025 Essay paper tested exactly the skill we trained our students for: interpreting abstract, philosophical statements. Two of the five topics, on the examined life and on privilege, had strong matches in our tests, enough for a RAYACADEMY student to write both essays on practised ground.

That was no accident. We built our essay tests around philosophical topics, set 12 of our 20 topics as aphorisms, and set every topic in English and Odia. For OCS 2026, the question is not which topic will come. It is whether you have trained yourself to write well on any of them.
