UPSC CSE 2027 in a Nutshell
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has already published its 2027 exam calendar, so the dates for the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2027 are known well in advance. Prelims is on 23 May 2027, Mains begins on 20 August 2027, and the notification is scheduled for 13 January 2027. With roughly seven months left for Prelims, aspirants who start a structured plan now have a real advantage over those who wait for the notification.
This guide covers everything a serious aspirant needs: dates, eligibility, exam pattern, syllabus, vacancies, a month-by-month study plan and the mistakes that cost candidates an attempt. It is written by the RAYACADEMY IAS academic team, which teaches and mentors UPSC and OPSC aspirants from our Odisha campus in Bhubaneswar and our New Delhi office.

UPSC CSE 2027 Important Dates
UPSC released its annual calendar on 20 May 2026. The CSE-related dates are:
Event | Date |
UPSC CSE 2027 notification and start of applications | 13 January 2027 (Wednesday) |
Last date to apply | 2 February 2027 (Tuesday) |
UPSC CSE Prelims 2027 | 23 May 2027 (Sunday) |
UPSC CSE Mains 2027 | Starts 20 August 2027 (Friday), 5 days |
Indian Forest Service Mains 2027 | Starts 21 November 2027 |
Interview (Personality Test) | Announced separately after the Mains result |
Two points are worth noting. First, the gap between Prelims and Mains is only about 90 days, so Mains preparation cannot wait until the Prelims result. Second, the calendar fixes the schedule, but the notification confirms the final rules, so always cross-check eligibility details on upsc.gov.in once it is out.
UPSC CSE 2027 Eligibility Criteria
The 2027 notification will confirm the final conditions. The details below follow the CSE 2026 rules and are what aspirants should plan around.
Nationality: Indian citizenship is required for IAS, IPS and IFS. Other services allow certain additional categories as per the notification.
Educational qualification: A bachelor's degree from a recognised university. Candidates awaiting their final-year result can apply, subject to later verification.
Age limit (as on 1 August 2027, expected):
Category | Upper age limit | Attempts |
General / EWS | 32 years | 6 |
OBC (non-creamy layer) | 35 years | 9 |
SC / ST | 37 years | Unlimited, within the age limit |
PwBD | Up to 10 years of relaxation | 9 for General/EWS/OBC; unlimited within age limit for SC/ST |
The minimum age is 21 years. For General and EWS candidates, the expected date-of-birth range is 2 August 1995 to 1 August 2006.
Attempt rule that many aspirants miss: an attempt is counted at the Prelims stage. Appearing for even one Prelims paper counts as an attempt, so plan before you sit the exam, not after.
Application fee: Rs 100 for General and OBC candidates; women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates are exempt.
UPSC CSE 2027 Exam Pattern
Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (screening test)
Paper | Questions | Marks | Duration | Nature |
General Studies Paper I | 100 | 200 | 2 hours | Counted for the cut-off |
CSAT (General Studies Paper II) | 80 | 200 | 2 hours | Qualifying: 33% required |
There is negative marking of one-third for each wrong answer. Prelims marks are used only to decide who moves on to Mains and do not count in the final ranking.
Stage 2: Main Examination (descriptive)
Paper | Marks | Notes |
Paper A: Indian language | 300 | Qualifying only |
Paper B: English | 300 | Qualifying only |
Essay | 250 | Counted |
General Studies I to IV | 250 each (1,000) | Counted |
Optional subject, Papers I and II | 250 each (500) | Counted |
Total counted for merit | 1,750 |
GS I: Indian heritage and culture, history, geography of the world and society
GS II: Governance, constitution, polity, social justice, international relations
GS III: Technology, economic development, biodiversity, environment, security, disaster management
GS IV: Ethics, integrity and aptitude
Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)
The interview carries 275 marks, taking the final merit total to 2,025. It tests clarity of thought, balanced judgement, communication and suitability for public service, not just factual knowledge.
UPSC CSE 2027 Syllabus: How to Read It Like a Topper
The syllabus is the most underused document in UPSC preparation. Toppers do three things with it:
Map every topic to a source. Each syllabus line should point to one standard book or resource, so you never read ten sources for one topic.
Overlay previous year questions (PYQs). Mark which syllabus areas UPSC actually asks about, and how it frames them. This tells you depth, not just topic.
Link Prelims and Mains. Polity, economy, environment, geography and history serve both stages. Study once, then revise in two forms: facts and elimination for Prelims, arguments and examples for Mains.
How Many Vacancies Can You Expect?
UPSC announces vacancies along with the notification, so the official figure for 2027 is not out yet. For perspective, recent cycles have been broadly in the 900 to 1,100 range: about 1,105 in CSE 2024, about 979 in 2025 and about 933 in 2026. Treat this as context, not a prediction. Your preparation does not depend on the number.
UPSC CSE 2027 Study Plan: From Now to Prelims and Mains
As of 30 October 2026, there are roughly 29 weeks to Prelims. A practical phase-wise plan:
Phase | Period | Focus |
1. Foundation | November to December 2026 | Understand the syllabus and PYQ pattern; NCERT-level base for history, geography, polity, economy; choose your optional subject; start a daily newspaper habit |
2. Core build | January to February 2027 | Standard sources for GS subjects; optional syllabus; weekly current affairs consolidation; begin short daily answer-writing practice |
3. Revision and tests | March to April 2027 | First full revision; Prelims mock tests with analysis of errors; CSAT practice to stay safely above 33% |
4. Final sprint | 1 to 22 May 2027 | Second and third revision of notes; mocks in exam-time conditions; no new sources |
5. Post-Prelims | 24 May to 19 August 2027 | Answer-writing cycles, optional revision, essay practice, mentor feedback |
If you already have a job or are in college, the same plan works. Shift to a fixed weekday minimum and a longer weekend block, and protect the revision phase above everything else.
8 Preparation Strategies That Work for UPSC CSE 2027
Start with PYQs, not books. Reading the last 10 years of questions first shows what UPSC values and prevents over-reading.
Keep one source per topic. Many resources create the illusion of progress. Revision of a few good sources creates marks.
Make current affairs static-linked. Tie each news item to a syllabus topic, a concept and a possible Mains angle. Skip trivia.
Write answers from day one. Mains is a writing exam. Even two answers a day build structure, speed and clarity.
Take mock tests early and analyse them honestly. The analysis is worth more than the score: classify errors as concept gaps, silly mistakes or guesswork.
Do not neglect CSAT. It is qualifying, but it eliminates strong GS candidates every year. Keep weekly practice going.
Revise on a calendar, not on feeling. Fixed revision cycles (for example 1 day, 1 week, 1 month) beat random re-reading.
Protect your health and consistency. Seven steady hours beat twelve unsustainable ones.
Common Mistakes That Cost Aspirants an Attempt
Waiting for the notification to begin serious preparation
Changing optional subjects or mentors repeatedly
Collecting resources instead of revising them
Skipping answer writing until after Prelims
Not tracking attempts and age limits before applying
Studying in isolation with no external feedback on answers
