UNDERSTANDING THE EXAMINATION

About the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE) to recruit officers into services including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and other central services. The examination is organised around three successive stages, each testing different capabilities.

The examination combines conceptual understanding, current affairs, reasoning, descriptive writing and the evaluation of personal suitability for public service. Candidates should consult the official UPSC notification for eligibility, attempts, vacancies and the current syllabus.

What does General Studies Foundation mean?

A General Studies (GS) Foundation course introduces core subjects before connecting them to examination-oriented revision, objective questions and descriptive writing. The integrated Foundation pathway is designed for the main stages of the examination rather than only one paper.

Suitable for first-time aspirants, college students, graduates and those seeking a structured long-term preparation plan.
