OPSC Practice Questions: Prelims MCQ Types, Format & Free Practice Sets

Learn how OPSC frames Prelims MCQs, the main question types with examples, and how to practise. Download GS I, GS II and an OMR sheet, or practise online. Why Practice Questions Decide Your OPSC Result

Practice questions are the fastest way to turn what you have studied into marks. In the OPSC OCS exam, reading a topic is not enough: you must recognise it inside a tricky question, choose among close options and do it under time pressure.

This guide explains why both Prelims and Mains practice matter, with a special focus on the Prelims MCQ. You will see how OPSC frames questions, the main MCQ types with examples, and a simple method to practise. At the end you can download a GS Paper I, a GS Paper II and an OMR sheet, or practise online on the RAYACADEMY platform.

Why Both Prelims and Mains Practice Are Important

The OCS exam has three stages, and each needs a different kind of practice.

Prelims practice builds speed and accuracy. The Prelims is an objective screening test of two General Studies papers, 200 marks and 2 hours each, with negative marking. It decides whether your attempt continues, and it is competitive, as the cut-offs for recent years show. Regular MCQ practice trains you to read carefully, eliminate wrong options and manage time and risk.

Mains practice builds depth and expression. The Mains is descriptive, so the same topic must now be explained in 150 to 250 words, with structure, examples and a conclusion. Writing practice with feedback is the only way to improve this, and it decides your final rank.

Together, they close each other's gaps. MCQ practice shows what you do not know, and Mains writing shows whether you really understand it. A student who only reads cannot do either.

How OPSC Frames Prelims MCQs

OPSC Prelims questions are objective, with four options and one correct answer. Studying past papers, a few patterns stand out:

  • Statement-based questions dominate. Instead of asking a plain fact, OPSC often gives two or three statements and asks which are correct, so half-knowledge is not enough.

  • Options are close. Wrong options are usually plausible, with one word or date changed, to test whether you truly know the fact.

  • Breadth across General Studies. Questions come from history, polity, geography, economy, environment, science, current affairs and a clear Odisha component covering the state's history, culture, geography and economy.

  • Current affairs are linked to static topics. A recent event is used to test a basic concept behind it.

  • Bilingual papers. Question papers are set in English and Odia, and the English version prevails in case of doubt.

  • Paper II is different. The second paper tests comprehension, logical reasoning, data interpretation and basic numeracy, and it is qualifying in nature, with a 33% minimum.

The exact weight of each subject changes from year to year, so analyse the official papers rather than relying on one source.

Types of Prelims MCQs With Examples

Knowing the type of question tells you how to attack it. The examples below are original practice questions in the OPSC style.

1. Direct (single best answer)

A plain question with four options.

Q. The Rath Yatra of Puri celebrates the journey of Lord Jagannath to which temple? (a) Lingaraj Temple (b) Gundicha Temple (c) Konark Sun Temple (d) Mukteswar Temple

Answer: (b). Approach: recall the fact. Avoid overthinking.

2. Statement-based (which of the statements is/are correct)

The most common format.

Q. Consider the following statements about the Mahanadi.

  1. It originates in Chhattisgarh.

  2. The Hirakud Dam is built on it. Which of the statements given above is/are correct? ( a) 1 only (b) 2 only (c) Both 1 and 2 (d) Neither 1 nor 2

Answer: (c). Approach: test each statement separately. If you are sure one is false, you can eliminate options quickly.

3. "How many of the above" questions

The hardest to guess, because you must judge every item.

Q. Consider the following places in Odisha: 1. Simlipal 2. Bhitarkanika 3. Nandankanan. How many of them are National Parks? ( a) Only one (b) Only two (c) All three (d) None

Answer: (b). Simlipal and Bhitarkanika are National Parks, while Nandankanan is a zoological park. Approach: no shortcuts, so only attempt it if you can judge each item.

4. Match the following

Q. Match the place with its famous monument.

List I (Place)

List II (Monument)

1. Konark

A. Lingaraj Temple

2. Puri

B. Jain rock-cut caves

3. Bhubaneswar

C. Sun Temple

4. Khandagiri

D. Jagannath Temple

(a) 1-C, 2-D, 3-A, 4-B (b) 1-D, 2-C, 3-A, 4-B

(c) 1-C, 2-D, 3-B, 4-A (d) 1-A, 2-B, 3-C, 4-D

Answer: (a). Approach: place the pairs you are sure of first, and the options often reduce to one.

5. Assertion and Reason

Q. Assertion (A): Odisha's coast is frequently hit by cyclones.

Reason (R): The Bay of Bengal provides warm waters that favour cyclone formation.

(a) Both A and R are true, and R explains A

(b) Both A and R are true, but R does not explain A

(c) A is true, but R is false

(d) A is false, but R is true

Answer: (a). Approach: check each separately, then ask whether the reason really explains the assertion.

6. Chronological order

Q. Arrange these events in order:

1. Kalinga War

2. Reign of Kharavela

3. Reign of Anantavarman Chodagangadeva

4. Reign of Kapilendra Deva.

(a) 1-2-3-4 (b) 2-1-3-4

(c) 1-3-2-4 (d) 1-2-4-3

Answer: (a). Approach: anchor the earliest and latest events, then fit the rest.

7. Data, reasoning and numeracy (CST-Paper II)

Q. A train 120 m long crosses a pole in 6 seconds. What is its speed in km/h?

(a) 60 (b) 72

(c) 80 (d) 90

Answer: (b). 120 m in 6 s is 20 m/s, and 20 × 18/5 = 72 km/h. Approach: convert units first, then calculate.

8. Current affairs-linked questions

These give a recent scheme, report or event and ask a static concept behind it, such as the authority that runs a scheme, the objective of a law or the place where an event occurred. Approach: for every news item you read, note the "who, what, where and why" in one line.

How to Practise Prelims MCQs the Right Way

  1. Solve in exam conditions. Set a 2-hour timer and use an OMR sheet so that bubbling answers is part of your practice.

  2. Learn the negative marking rule. Recent OCS Prelims papers deduct one-third of a mark for every wrong answer, so check the latest notification. If a question carries 1 mark, a blind guess among four options has an expected value of zero. If you can eliminate one option, the odds turn in your favour, so guess only after eliminating.

  3. Use a three-pass method. In the first pass, answer what you know for sure. In the second, attempt questions where you can eliminate options. In the third, decide on the rest.

  4. Review every paper. Mark each wrong answer as a concept gap, a careless error or a guess, and fix them in that order.

  5. Keep an error log. Write down the fact behind each mistake, and revise the log every week.

  6. Practise sectionally, then in full. Start with subject-wise tests, then move to full-length GS Paper I and GS Paper II.

  7. Revise Odisha topics. Odisha-specific history, culture, geography, economy and current affairs reward steady revision.

  8. Do not neglect Paper II. It is qualifying, but failing it ends your attempt, so practise reasoning and numeracy regularly.

Why Toppers Recommend RAYACADEMY IAS Tests

Question practice is only as good as the tests behind it. RAYACADEMY IAS, in Khandagiri, Bhubaneswar, is our recommendation for OAS/OCS test practice, and its students have said why.

Siddhant Nayak, who secured Rank 20 in OPSC OCS 2022 and studied with the academy, said the tests helped him a great deal. In his experience, many questions in the tests were exactly the same as, or small modifications of, questions that appeared in the real exam.

Here is what makes the tests worth your time:

  • Comprehensive coverage. Sectional and full-length mock tests cover the whole syllabus, so you can practise subject by subject and then as a full paper.

  • Exam-like questions. Tests are designed around the pattern and style of OPSC papers, in both English and Odia.

  • Model answers and discussion classes. After each test, a model answer and a discussion class explain the right answer and why the others are wrong.

  • Evaluation within 7 days. Answer copies are checked by UPSC/OPSC faculty and Mains-qualified experts, with written feedback.

  • Odia-medium evaluation. Students can write and be evaluated in Odia.

  • Mentorship. The Mains Mentorship Program adds subject classes, current affairs, PYQ discussion and 1-on-1 mentorship.

  • Proven results. The academy reports 80+ selections out of 200 in OCS 2024, 140+ in OCS 2023 and 150+ in OCS 2022. See the RAYACADEMY IAS results page.
